History: Cartagena de Indias, oficially Distrito Turístico y Cultural de Cartagena de Indias, abbreviated Cartagena de Indias D. T y C., is a colombian city, capital of the department of Bolivar. It was founded on June 1st, 1533 by Pedro de Heredia. Since 1991 Cartagena is a tourist and cultural district. The city is located in the shore of the Caribbean Sea.

Since its foundation in the XVI century and during all of the spanish colonial years, Cartagena de Indias was one of the most importants ports in America. From that time comes the majority of its cultural and artistic heritage. In November 11, 1811, Cartagena was declared independent of Spain. This day is a national holiday and in the city it's celebrated in four days known as "Fiestas de Independencia".
